In a high-tempo series of operations throughout the Black and Aegean Seas and the eastern Mediterranean, this small force of destroyers and other naval vessels responded ably to several major international crises. Home-ported in Constantinople, U.S. Navy ships helped evacuate some 150,000 White Russians during the last days of the Russian Revolution; coordinated the visits of the Hoover grain ships to ports in southern Russia where millions were suffering a horrendous famine; reported on the terrible death marches endured by the Greeks of the Pontus region of Turkey; and conducted the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of Greek and Armenian refugees from burning Smyrna, the cataclysmic conclusion of the Turkish Nationalist Revolution. After Smyrna, the destroyers escorted Greek steamers in their rescue of ethnic Christian civilians being expelled from all the ports of Anatolian Turkey.

Very interesting and well researched book about this horrible time in Greek/Armenian/Turkish history. My grandfather was an American sailor on The Bulmer stationed in the Black Sea. He met and married my Greek grandmother in 1923 Constantinople. I bought this book to learn and understand more about their lives as I continue family research. I am forever grateful for this book, since I was never able to meet them and ask about their lives.Product details

A well documented book about a little know era and area. Fascinating to all but relive the disintegration of Imperial Russia, the genocide of the Armenians, and the rise of modern Turkey as seen by a small group of US sailors under the leadership of a commanding officer who was not shy or reluctant to let his strong feeling in favor of the rising of the new Turkish leadership influence the mission of small group of ships. Bob Shenk who was a shipmate of mine in the mid 60's has done a superb job of documenting the events as well as describing how life on a small ship or groups of ships actually can and d get involved in various life saving missions. Contemporary observers of the Middle East are well aware of conflicts between Israelis and Palestinians, between Sunni and Shiite Muslims, between Kurds and other groups, between Coptic Christians and Muslims, but we have largely forgotten about the conflicts that were central to the region a century and more ago, as the Ottoman Empire was breaking up, the Great War was ending, and the Russian Revolution was taking place; nor do we remember how the United States reacted to those events at the time. Robert Shenk has used such primary sources as diaries, personal letters, and official correspondence between the Departments of State and Navy to bring to life both the bloody conflict--between Turks and Greeks and Turks and Armenians--as well as life in Constantinople as experienced by U.S. Naval personnel assigned to ships deployed to the region during the period. Many White Russians escaping the Bolsheviks were transported on American ships from Black Sea ports to Constantinople, and Greeks being expelled from Anatolia were likewise picked up by the U.S. Navy. Shenk has vividly re-created the era--the lurid life in the Pera district of what is now called Istanbul, the "summer camp" for the Americans several miles up the Bosporus Strait, the obtuseness of certain American officials (some of whom went on to important military and government positions during World War II and later), and the misbehavior ashore of younger members of the U.S. Navy. This carefully researched and well-documented study adds dimension to our understanding of contemporary Turkey, and inevitably inspires reflection on more recent U.S. intervention in the region.
VERY INTERESTING TALE ABOUT, AT LEAST TO ME, A LITTLE KNOWN MISSION OF THE US NAVY , POST WWI. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE ENJOYABLE HAD THE PROSE BEEN A TAD BETTER,

The NYPL. They said the book was restricted. I could go to the main library on Fith Avenue & 42nd Street. Then in the presence of the librarian read the book provide no one else got there first on that day. What are we not suppose to know ?
Excellent book! Great source of information regarding the role of the US Navy in the Black Sea area during the First World War. I personally found particularly interesting the chapters that dealt with Pontus and Smyrna, and the expulsion of minorities.
The book elegantly and thoroughly covers an era of U.S. Navy history that is almost unremembered today, when it would be almost unthinkable that a U.S. Navy flag officer of marked prejudices could pretty much control U.S. foreign relations policy in an area fraught with danger and under constant threat of total social explosion. The author not only covers the geopolitical aspects of his unusual story but also gives a marvelous portrait of the lives and actions of individual officers and sailors, most of who behaved impeccably in the face of great uncertainty. Certainly one of the finest "naval" books of the past several years.
