This sweet YA book traces the journey of 17-year-old cross-country runner Jason (Jace) Waldron as he navigates the shoals of physical attraction and meaningful attachment, all the while dealing with behemoth football players who threaten to separate him from his head, dating embarrassments that would be daunting to someone three times his age, and a tragedy in which he is both an unwitting participant and a hero.Because of a misunderstanding, Jace agrees to become assistant coach of the Valkyries, a softball team populated by an interesting, often headstrong, assortment of young girls and coached by his mother. In the midst of his coaching duties, he is whipsawed by his devotion to his dream girl, Stephanie, but also fascinated by her sister Sylvia, who happens to be the Valkyries’ other assistant coach. As he sorts out his feelings, he deals with crazy softball parents, an injury to his mother that places him and Stephanie in the coaching roles, arcane softball rules, and the Valkyries’ unlikely improvement throughout the season.
The book has some unexpected twists and turns as the likeable but somewhat hapless Jace grows into a young man who takes responsibility for his life and his choices. Softball aficionados will have a particular affinity for this book because its game descriptions are extensive and detailed. Those who don’t know softball will come to like and admire the young protagonist. For young teens and their parents looking for a YA book that doesn’t take readers to the dark places of teenage alcoholism, drug addiction, abuse, or sex and pregnancy, Fast-Pitch Love is a pleasant alternative that is carefully researched and well-written.

A delightful story with enjoyable characters. I'm quite a bit removed from this age group, but still remember the ups and downs of teen romance! Well done, Clay Cormany!
A good story is one that has characters that you come to care about and moves along quickly through the narrative. Fast Pitch Love meets those criteria. It is an enjoyable read.
"Fast Pitch Love" was entertaining. Readers who liked "Paper Towns" and YA fiction will enjoy this book! I got hooked on the storyline and flew through it in a couple days. I don't know much about sports but that didn't detract from the story for me. There are some great lines and twists that made this book a fun read and I would recommend it for anyone who enjoys a coming-of-age story!
Loved the book. It is great book for teenagers and for any teenager who likes sports, regardless of sex or gender. I can’t wait for this author’s next book.
Not really a sports fan I only started to read this book because a friend wrote it. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that it is much more than softball. It's more about a teenage crush and the main character coming to terms with the old saying that beauty is only skin deep and finding out what really is important in life. A great book for young teenagers, I'd recommend it wholeheartedly.
Like the spin on a fastball, Fast-Pitch Love puts a new spin on the age old boy meets girl phenomenon. And what a wonderful spin it is. Clay Cormany weaves together the twin themes of teenage infatuation and a girls’ softball team. Along the way he does a wonderful job of mixing the excitement of youth sports with the impending showdown between two suitors of the same pretty girl.
As we build to the end we have no idea that the ending will be as dramatic and important as it turned out to be. I won’t spoil the end for you, but I will say it caught me by surprise. No its’ not one softball team defeating another, it is way more satisfying.
I highly recommend this book.
I enjoyed this Young adult novel by Clay Cormany. The story told from a guy's perspective made it especially interesting. I think a lot of young women would enjoy seeing romance from a guy's point of view.
I also liked that the novel was innocent without gratuitous sex or swear words. The story took some turns that I never would have expected, and I found myself caught up in the girls' softball team as well, wondering what might happen to them.
I'm an adult, not a young adult, and I don't play softball, but still the story captured me and kept me reading till the end.
